Power Dynamics Cases
This webpage is intended to provide a repository of publicly available, non-confidential interactive transient stability level power system scenarios. These scenarios can be run using the PowerWorld Dynamics Studio package (click here for a link to download the free 42 bus educational version).
If you would like to contribute additional cases, please email the *.pwb/*.pwd files with a scenario description to Richard Macwan (rmacwan@illinois.edu).
Illini 42 Tornado
The Illini 42 bus case models a 345/138 kV fictitious network. The scenario starts with the system in a reasonable operating condition. Then, within a minute a tornado by the Prairie Substation takes out three 345 kV transmission lines and forces a 500 MW wind farm off-line. Read more…
IlliniGMD 42 HEMP
The IlliniGMD 42 bus case models a 500/345/161 kV fictitious network. The scenario starts with the system in a reasonable operating condition. Then, within a few seconds a high altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) E3 blast strikes the system, inducing large amounts of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in the system. Read more…
